BHRR's Freedom was ADOPTED today!
I have asked his adoptive home to send us a fav photo so we can post it. 🙂
AND here is the photo!
BHRR's Freedom has been doing well in his temp foster home.
Some minor shoe chewing going on(one shoe of two different pairs…) and one step backwards when too much freedom was given too soon and he began to do some marking and I advised to go back to basics. I believe that all dogs need to build up and earn being able to be trusted for full freedom of a home and it was a bit too early(the home had thought he was doing great and gavem him the freedom and it happens!) and all was corrected and things have been very smooth overall!!!
JOB well done and thumbs up to the home! 🙂
He has settled in so well and even their cat(yet, is he really a cat? 😉 ) loves him!
He has been reaching the same milestones in his temp foster home that he had done with myself and that is so rewarding and wonderful to see! 🙂
He has graduated back down to just one collar as he has adjusted to life in their home and he loves his two foster sisters – I heard rumour that he is really 'crushing' on one of them. Well, who wouldn't? Both other dogs in the home are BHRR doggies that have been adopted! 😉
I have been so happy for him and knew this was the right matched fit for him and them and it has been just lovely to hear the updates!!
His is also showing his monkey man movements in their home and YAY! YAY!
Below are some photos taken by his temp foster family.
AND, I am also going to post that this boy has received an application and we are going to place him under a PENDING ADOPTION as we go through the adoption process.
Will update as I can!

Tonight my heart bursts with such pride and joy!! The beautiful brindle GD that once had to be carried, then was belly crawling and then crouching and slouched, stood up tall and regal tonight, stood quietly full of anticipation while I put on his leashes and walked out the front door…
From there down the brick path where he pawed so gently to have me open it and went with a small tail wag down the steps with impeccable leashes manners and we walked(he actually trotted a bit by my side) to my car.
From there, he trustingly and happily jumped up in my car and turned to sit.
We made the one hour drive to……first get some gas and he asked to get out and do a small visit with people at the station – in the dark too! – and ended up at his temp foster home.
He trusted me and came out of the car willingly and relaxed and walked tall and strong to the door…
BHRR's Freedom, you are nothing like the dog that arrived at the ES and this experience being temp fostered per my recent blog post, is going to continue to make you that best dog you can be, balanced as normal can be for you and as a few know, if I owned less dogs myself, this boy is who I would want to stay as one of ours for my heart belongs very much to him…
To say good-bye was hard and I had you distracted while I left yet, as I drove away, I saw your gorgeous face at their window trying to find me and Kinsley, my co-pilot discreetly handed me some tissue as I drove away…..
It is because I love you so much that this is the right thing for you dear man….you shall deeply benefit being in the hands of others to help continue being that best dog you can be!!! You are one fabu boy already and are nothing like that boy that I first saw/worked with at the ES and then at BHRR….
Love you my dear man and look forward to receiving your updates and some photos and I know that your right matched forever home shall find you too…..patience….
This temp foster was a hard one for me yet, could not have had a better fit home for him to go to!! Thank you all for giving of yourselves to help me help him!! 🙂
BHRR's Freedom shall be temp fostered as of tonight.
THIS shall be really good for him. He continues to just become that better and better dog that he truly is and we want to help make him the best dog that he can be. He shall continue to just get better and better with me – he has gone from having to be carried at the ES, to belly crawling to slouching to zooming, standing tall and exploring! YET, being temp fostered is deeply going to help him along to being this way in many situations plus surroundings.
HECK! When we had the family over on Sunday the 10th for the BHRR 'PRIVATE' BHRR EXPERIENCE, he was even found to be sitting proud and tall on one of our couches! Sean and I had to triple loook to be assured it was him! LOL
He has a monkey streak and likes to take my towels as I am folding them and run…yet, I am careful not to chase him as it would scare him and so, I make soft sounds and words and say 'I am going to get you' and he prances and will drop the item. He has that spark in his eye and time…in time….I know that the full monkey shall come out…he is getting there. 🙂
I really am taken with him and I have said to more than one person that if I had less Danes, I would seriously consider him….He is very special to me as a few are now aware and for several reasons.
How he ended up into the hands of the PRU place is very tragic. I know he was not born there and so much damage had been done to this poor boy and all the other hundreds upon hundreds of dogs.
He loves to zoom and run and has learned to play and interact with the other dogs and he is like a puppy with those front legs all flopping as he tries to be co-ordinated. So long being confined has really affected the co-ordination of these FREEDOM DANES/DOGS.
At the Vet Hospital on Tuesday February 11th, he weighed 56.1 KGs(123.42 pounds). This is up from his January 14th weight of 54. 5 KGs(119.9 pounds), so, he has recovered most well with his bounce back from his coyote attack.
HE has healed so well! His shoulder, the one wound that all felt could get away from not being sutured and was, ended up the worst and after a re-visit and debriding, it has healed well. I WANT to shout out a THANK YOU to his angel Dee again that made another very kind and generous donation to his Bills.
THANK YOU! You are his true angel! 🙂
He was a HUGE hit at KAH and people continue to remark that how everytime they see him, how much taller he stands and how much more he explores AND this time, he actually layed down on his own as we were examining BHRR's Abby. SHE was really good for him too! REALLY good! He was all manly and happy and was even wagging his tail slightly and had to 'supervise' the exam.
He was going up to people asking for some quiet love and assurance AND I just gently reminded people that we do not reach over his head, just gently underneath and no hard pats on his body or head either. Just slow and calm and quietly confident and he responds.
I also reminded people that though, he may not look like he is watching people, he really is…these dogs are so worried about direct eye contact.
AND everyone remarked how bonded he was with me and that is true….
SOOOOOOOOOOOO, as hard as it is in SOOOOOOOOOOOO many ways to let go, I cannot give him continued regular exposure to city buses, snow plows, air brakes, sirens, alarms, traffic etc….I live in the country and he needs to continue to become more and more exposed and comfortable with these things. DO not get me wrong, he is miles away from where he first started his rehab journey in this area yet, living in a temp foster home in the city is ONLY going to benefit him further and I am a smart enough woman to know that and always want what is best for him and all my dogs.
He shall be handled more by other people than myself and be handled when I am not around and yes, it is going to be a bit hard on him in the begining YET, if for any reason, he has to come back to me, I AM HERE!
Yet, I think he is going to be great as this is a right matched temp foster home for him and will help join the circle of success that I have worked so hard to surround him with since he arrived to BHRR and he is going to be just fine…me too! 😉
I sincerely hope in time that I shall be able to get some great photos of him as I am hoping that his right matched forever loving home may then find him sooner…
I feel this boy with all my soul and yup, I am going to miss him….I am a suck! I admit it!
I thank his approved temp foster home for this opportunity to help me to continue to make him that best dog he can be! THANK YOU!

DEADLINE is February 8th, 2013 to get in your orders so that they can be received by Valentine's Day! 🙂
BHRR's Freedom was dropped of at KAH yesterday as the one wound on his shoulder(the one that everyone, us included, felt would heal very well out of all of them!) was not healing well.
If did not help that he would scratch at it while it was trying to heal and pulled the sutures out and even though he had a sock and shirt on, he was still managed to cause more trauma.
The antibiotics just could not stay on top of it either and I wanted a re-check, new the edges would need to be debrided and the wound flushed. As to whether it needed to be re-sutured, that would have to be decided by his Vet once they were able to get a much closer look at it after the debriding. It was granulating quite nicely under the top layer of pulled sutures and edges of dead tissue.
He weighed 54.50 KGs(119.90 pounds) up from his last weight of December 2011 of 51 KGs(112.20 pounds). He looks great!!!
He was so well loved by everyone! They kept making comments about how nice and obedient he was and sweet plus how large his feet were! 😀
I have photos after his wound was taken care of, no sutures were decided to be needed and it looks FANTASTIC!
Her was still very nervous of the world YET, miles away from where he was upon first arriving to BHRR.
I really am touched immensely by this boy………very much….
He shall remain on antibiotics for another week.
BHRR's Freedom's Right Shoulder After Second Vet Visit – January 14th, 2012
Sean called me at KAH @ 7:39 PM on January 2nd, 2012. He said that there was another coyote attack despite three adults supervising the dogs in the 3+ fenced in acres for the dogs.
We replaced all the fencing that we could from page and gaming to 4×2's while the weather was still warm enough to break ground yet, the snow began to fly and the ground froze. So, most of our original thought to be greatsafe and has been for a few years of fencing of page and gaming fence is still up and we shall have to endeavor to replace all with 4×2's come spring/summer or do a fence within a fence idea etc.
It was one month and one day since BHRR's Jetta's attack. They are getting much more bold and this one jumped the fence – and that fence is 6+ feet high.
The coyotes fanned the area and all targets have been submissive dogs for the coyotes.
Sean was not 100% sure if BHRR's Freedoms should go in and sent me some photos. I said that I would look closer when I got home yet, yes, he should go in. KAH was closing at 8 PM and I drove right home with BHRR's Spice and took one look at BHRR's Freedom. The biggest concern was if the ear could be repaired. Ears are terrible things to try and surgical fix when injured. He did have two other punctures that could possibly require sutures yet, would most likely heal well sans sutures after flushing and put on heavy duty antibiotics. He also had other smaller punctures/wounds.
It was exactly two weeks to the date that I had been at Alta Vista with BHRR's Dana. I did go back the day after she passed away to figure out the accounting of the bills yet, it was an eerily feeling in many ways for not only it was exactly two weeks, yet, it was within minutes of the same time that I had arrived with her.
His weight was a solid and very muscled(he received several compliments on his nice body tone/muscle).
BHRR's Freedom was excellent on his leash manners and was a bit nervous getting into the car and I felt bad for him as this experience 'out and about' would not be the uber positive one like all the others(save for his neuter!) for him.
He did all that was asked of him and I could not be more proud of his willingness to trust and listen to me. He was slouched low to the ground on more than one occassion yet, overall, was at least standing
He is so sweet and a very loving boy and I know that that right matched forever loving home is going to see in him what we do….a really special boy that has been so wronged done by before being rescued and that with patience, time, consistency, love and structure, he shall continue becoming the best dog he can be and he is one AMAZING dog already!
We remain patient to then…..
Yet, back to his Vet Visit.
The Vet agreed that the ear was the worst and that it would be tricky to try and repair for an ear is a tough thing to do surgery on – it was very jagged and the inside flap more than the outside – and the question was 'if' an attempt should be made. Yet, with how it was presenting, we all agreed, something did need to be done for it could not stay the way it was. We completely accepted that his ear would not look 'normal' after that and all the other wounds/punctures, would be flushed as the smell of infection was quickly setting in. Amazing how fast that bacteria that teems form the mouth causes infection. I left it with the ICU/Emerg Vet if they felt it was warranted to suture any of the punctures while he was sedated – in the end, they did two. They did feel that they would have healed fine without yet, I supported them being sutured if it would make things heal better for him.
They did a quick reversal on him yet, did not give him all the Antiseden as being stressed and nervous, this would allow him to rest longer while he was in recovery. I appreciated that the Vet understood what I was saying about BHRR's Freedom and that this was in his best interest. I felt much more comfortable leaving him for a few more hours and what an intuitive Vet! 🙂
He was out of surgery by 4:00 AM and he could come home anytime after 7 AM and he was headed home by 8 AM.
He is on Clavamox and Deramaxx and I shall remove the sutures in about 10-14 days time.
When the Vet talked to me at 4 AM, they mentioned they were so pleased by how nicely his ear did repair and that there would only be a few spots that may look 'crinkly'. They also discussed the mild debriding that had to be done on several areas yet, was not extensive. I thanked them profusely. VERY!
I ALSO want to thank the angel profusely who asked if I had enough funds to begin treatment for BHRR's Freedom. With BHRR's Dana's credit on the account by her life angels, I was 50% covered for treatment to begin and I paid the balance out of my own pocket for his bills.
FOR anyone thinking of wishing to consider to donate; I would ask to call Alta Vista Animal Hospital – (613) 731-6851 – and say you would like to put down a deposit for a credit on the account of 'FREEDOM' Boers so that the next BHRR doggie in need can benefit from your heart and kindness who will have to go to Emergency.
I am going to keep putting on a small amount each month as I can to keep building up a savings fund for emergencies do happen and over the last year, BHRR has had its share of dogs, have to go to Emerge as KAH and LAH were closed. Our funds have been so depleted and we keep trying to build up that 'slush' fund again.
Below are two photos that Sean sent my way of BHRR's Freedom's ear and neck on his iPhone, and the quality is not that great.
I shall take photos of BHRR's Freedom's healing progression and post as well.
HE is one very lucky boy….VERY! AND the whole time, he never once tried to fight back. He is such a sweet boy and the coyotes felt he was an 'easy' target. 🙁

UPDATE Sunday December 16th, 2012:
UPDATE ON VOTING CONTEST:
As many are aware from the public blanket statement posts I was making, as soon as I understood what was able to really occur with the voting in the food contest, I contacted MDB. This was not resulting in a fair contest to all r/q Rescues involved.
Either we all are able to vote once a day, only ever once, or multiple times daily. What was happening was not equal or fair to all involved. BHRR and it was so important that MDB be made aware of what was happening.
I am aware that they did a reset a couple of days ago to try and have people being able to only vote once every 24 hours and some could and others still could not vote again.
We have continued to support MDB in any successful resolution they felt was necessary and per their public post today, they have decided to do a reset from scratch – starting over.
I thank EACH of our supporters and believers that have campaigned so hard to assist the animals of BHRR and in sharing! 🙂 No words can tell you how much this has meant to BHRR for we do go through 120 POUNDS of dog food PER DAY.
AND good luck to all participating for round two!
BHRR's 5th ANNUAL "JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS" Online Auction is ON NOW UNTIL Thursday December 6th @ 9:00 PM EST!
We currently have 122 very exciting items up for grabs! MORE being added throughout the last day of this auction! 🙂
All monies raised shall go to the care of animals in need of BHRR and also assist the two new Saint Bernards headed our way!
BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of a new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many. Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 15th, 2012 to Monday January 7th, 2013 inclusive.
In preparation in having to do some emergency fundraising for BHRR's Autumn's ever growing mounting bills that shall include having several surgeries, we are going to be offering up a small BHRR's Autumn's EMERGENCY Online Auction
Auction details and how to bid can be found HERE – ITEMS can be added at any time – so, please check back!
Starts 6:00 AM EST on Monday October 29th, 2012
Ends 10:00 PM EST on Monday November 5th, 2012
NOTE: BHRR's Autumn's EMERGENCY ONLINE AUCTION does not replace our 5th ANNUAL 'JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS' ONLINE Auction to commence on Saturday November 24th, 2012!
From Friday October 19th to Sunday November 4th inclusive, BHRR will not be open for adoptions or the intake of adoption applications.
We do not adopt out around the Halloween season and many others Rescues, shelters, pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol.
We do not believe it is in the best interest of the animals in our program, especially for dark coloured dogs.
During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.
BHRR's Freedom is NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!!!
Here are two videos of BHRR's Freedom from back in April of his first out of BHRR social experience. He did great! Thanks to the amazing home that allowd us over! He did fabu with their kids(3 very young ones and their two Great Danes).
VIDEO #1
VIDEO #2
As with BHRR's Peanut, he shall require a home that is going to be patient, kind, understanding and lovingly consistent to help him continue along her amazing foundation path developed at BHRR.
He prefers to sleep in a crate still – we leave the door open AND he loves receiving BHRR's Journey Heart Biscuits as his treatie when he goes in. He likes to eat in his crate and still will go to the back when you lay the bowl down. Slow and easy is the way to go, so as to not terrify him.
Fast and flighty movements, especially from strangers still make him worried and nervous and he still has moments of 'hitting the ground' if someone goes at him straight on or has a raised voice or is carrying a bowl. These are going to be his 'lifetime labour of love' items that in the right home, he shall continue to just get better and better.
He is very bonded to me and MAN! Does he love his butt scratches! 🙂 He will ask me for love and affection and my heart melts every time.
He would do best in a quiet home, no kids, no cats.
BHRR's Freedom says that he is still shy/worried in new and strange surroundings yet in that right forever matched home, he just knows that se shall continue to become more comfortable and brave…..
He is like the cowardly lion on the Wizard of Oz that needs 'courage'……
He shall require a very patient, quiet, understanding and lovingly consistent home that will not rush him and will continue to build upon all the strong foundation he has had built up at BHRR; yet; he is ready to take the next step with others.
He is shy and yet; when you earn his trust and respect; he is so loving and affectionate and he is always watching me….just watching and I see the love in his eyes and the desire to want to give all of himself and he has come so far in his relaxing and the acceptance in him is incredible. This boy went through absolute hell and I shall never see him put in a home that will raise anything other than a finger in love and kindness to him.
Taking his collar still makes him slink down and you stay calm and passively ignore with a calming word.
He has a mischievous side FOR when I want him to come in from the yard and he is not yet ready, he likes to dance and prance around me! LOVE IT! 🙂
AND if he wants to come in and the door has a dog laying on the steps, he will make this soft whine as he is not brave enough to go over them and is no bulldozer that will go through them like some…uhmmmm…right BHRR's Bloom and BHRR's Dana? LOL
He is playful, loves rope toys and he will thrive in that right matched forever loving home. One that is not going to push him, yet; expose him slowly to continued wonderful things that life can give him.
He is only going to get better and better here at BHRR and we will work with the home that proves to be the right one for him for continued success!
Car rides are still a bit rough for him yet, better and better and the more he goes in and comes home, the better it gets. He tends to lay there but is relaxing more and more.
I am sure going to miss this boy. I had a HUGE connection to him from the first moment I laid eyes upon him at the Emergency Shelter. AND from all that people have told me, he looks up when he hears and smells me when I went to their area and when I left, I know I had to always give him a personal good-bye and he would then lay down. I remember one day having to leave him as two others were more urgent to take that day and I promised him that I would be taking him next and very soon……
I can still well up over how tragic all of these FREEDOM dogs were but my welling up is now full of smiles!!! 🙂
He has had some really good social outings with myself.
He cannot be rushed yet; the world shall be laid at your feet for that right matched forever loving home that is prepared to give him all that he needs and is more than deserving and worthy of!
Cameras very much make him scared YET; he allowed me to take the below two gems last night! 🙂
COME ON OUT TO SEE US THIS SATURDAY AUGUST 11th @ the Critter Jungle in Ottawa, Ontario!
RAIN OR SHINE! We shall be there! So, bring your dirty dawg and we shall wash plus towel dry for you!
We shall also have some items for sale to help raise much needed funds for the animals in need of BHRR.
AND it looks like the rain is going to be there BUT so shall we! 🙂 We are all going to be wet anyway! 😉

BHRR's Freedom & BHRR's Peanut are coming out with me on the 30th of June for another social play date.
Unfortunately, the second outing that I was hoping to have for BHRR's Freedom awhile ago; was cancelled due to the Volunteer having an injured animal at home.
Should this Visit go well, I shall be moving towards them having playdates, day trips etc. on their own for an hour or so with approved Volunteers. BOTH of them are coming along beautifully and I still have to update their blogs from their first social network dates.
Here is a VIDEO of BHRR's Rambo, BHRR's Rose, BHRR's Petal, BHRR's Gretta, BHRR's Jetta, BHRR's Goliath, BHRR's Freedom, JS, Drift, Guinnessand BHRR's Bloom from Sunday June 10th, 2012!
We had our most recent BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House on Saturday April 21st.
When we hosted our first BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House after the FREEDOM DANES arrived – end of November; we let them stay in their crates as their 'safe' spot and they could come out(which none did) if they would like to. We asked all of our attendees to be understanding and not push them and get into their space.
When we hosted our second BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House after the FREEDOM DANES arrived – end of February; we let them once more do what they desired and they came in and out at will. BIG improvement! The girls wanted to spend most of the day outside in the sun yet came into the sunroom for bits of time and allowed some people to pet them. Once again, we asked all of our attendees to be understanding and not push them and get into their space.
When we hosted our third BHRR 'EXPERIENCE' Mini Open House at the FREEDOM DANES arrived – April 21st; we did not allow the Danes as part of our next stage of move forward social rehabiltiation; to go into crates. Both BHRR's Peanut and BHRR's Gretta did once and I removed them and shut the crate door. Someone had let BHRR's Riley out of his crate and had not closed it behind him. We asked our attendees, of which most were respectful; and we only had to say a few words to some; to be understanding and not push them and get into their space.
BHRR's Freedom ROCKED it! BHRR's Peanut did very well and BHRR's Gretta is still much further behind than all five of the FREEDOM DANES here.
They are each travelling their own journeys from hell in their own ways; yet; all are very slow with baby steps and we continue to work towards their social rehab success – AND to each of them, this could mean something different. These were Danes that were carried for the longest time. So many did not know them at the ES or when they first arrived to BHRR and they think that a quiet word and a treat(which they would not take from every stranger we observed) is going to make them 'all better'.
These are dogs that have major trust issues and lack social skills and communication and they are not 'won' over with words of praise.
They are 'won' over by time, patience, consistency, routine, structure, obedience and routine…..with positive reinforcement and all of this comes to mean stability in their worlds.
They are not to be pitied as so many were want to do at the Open House, they are not to be felt sorry for; FOR these dogs to have any chance at living any semblance of a normal life(and normal to them could well mean something differerent for each of them); they need to be given some 'tough' love here and there. Gently pushing the boundaries when they have demonstrated they are ready and two more of them are and this means going out into the big scary world now. If I felt sorry for them, I would keep them safely closeted at BHRR for their lives and carried them in and out all day long as needed. FOR to have felt sorry for them, would have meant that they never would have learnt to walk on their own, learnt to play, sleep without standing all the time, take a treat, not cower at the back of their crates when you went to feed them, never became housebroken etc.
BHRR's FREEDOM had his first social time outing with me on April 7th and I will update his blog and soon it is BHRR's Peanut's time.
A word to any home that adopts them for I remain very positive that they shall be placed up for adoption at some point; that is an X time determination though; those homes cannot set them up for failure which shall undo all the foundation laying and proper build-up of their characters plus personalities since the day they came into BHRR.
So, for the one that may think that the 'tough' love of not allowing them to hang out in crates when they had no need of those crates any longer; was not 'good; please understand the 'why' of this. So many of these FREEDOM dogs out there (627 total) have been adopted quickly and bounced back to whereever they were adopted from. They bounced back because they were NOT ready to be adopted and the homes were NOT really prepared/ready for all that these dogs still needed.
THIS is not the mandate for BHRR. Quick to adopt is not in our vocabulary yet; at the same time; we work towards a move forward rehabilitation approach designed specifcally for each dog under our care. These dogs will be placed up for adoption WHEN they are ready, not before and they TELL me when it is time for the next steps.
We want forever loving homes, not failures for home and our dogs.
Always forward…they are a product of their past, live in their present and we look towards their future.
Just some food for thought….. 😉

Awhile back, I was contacted by a woman named Kathy Radar. She had recently purchased a new vehicle a ‘Journey’ and she had heard about BHRR’s Journey’s story. She contacted me wanting to do a Fundraiser to ‘Fill Up Her Journey For Journey & BHRR Friends’.
This is one reason why we are hosting a special BHRR ‘EXPERIENCE’ Mini Open House in April; for she shall be coming up to BHRR with her friend to drop off her Journey filled with goodies! I thought it would be lovely for her & her friend to meet others involved with BHRR, pass along their own appreciation for her efforts etc. 🙂
For anyone in the London, ON area that would like to participate; please contact Kathy directly. (519) 452-3009 – She is collecting items right up until April 19th inclusive!!!

GREAT JOB!
This is Phase 1 of our 5 year adoption expansion area plan.
In order for homes to be approved to adopt; all of our current thorough adoption criteria must be met.
HERE is the CBC Ottawa Morning radio interview with Anna, myself & BHRR’s Journey that was live/aired on Monday February 13th, 2012! It was re-aired at 5:40 AM on Tuesday February 14th, 2012
I have spent a good part of my AM answering emails, discussing what BHRR does, how BHRR does what we do, that we operate out of our home and those of our approved temp foster homes, why BHRR is so successful at what we do plus deeply thanking everyone for the continued support!
Education is so key and BHRR’s Journey continues to teach many about forgiveness, trust, giving, acceptance plus determination!
AND Anna, I am still in awe and inspired by your generous and giving soul!!!
I also finally was able to hear the interview myself! 😉
BHRR's Journey's article in The Ottawa Citizen.
A heartfelt touching warm story of a community being brought together by a GD who was in urgent need and how inspirational, beautiful their supportive efforts including those of Anna with her incredible WOW YUMMY Fundraising Biscuit idea to help save this special GD has been!
AND, Journey is bombing along in her rehabilitation and come April, she should be ready to be placed up for adoption!
SO many believed in you Journey and so many LOVE you!!! YOU are worthy, deserving and no less important than any other dog! 🙂
Some errors including that almost $3,000 in private donations have been sent not $1,000 to date; BHRR is not located in Oxford Mills; Journey is a 'she' not a he plus some of the timeline in the story is in error. BUT, a lovely article overall! 🙂
A COPY OF THIS ARTICLE IS BELOW:
OTTAWA — When she heard the story of Journey – the emaciated Great Dane found on Highway 401 just before Christmas, close to starvation and covered in bite wounds – Anna Gray-Henschel embarked on a journey of her own. She knew she had to do something to help, but she couldn't have imagined that, more than a month later, she would have baked 20,000 dog biscuits to raise money for his care.
As a dog lover, owner of two Great Danes and someone who recently decided to volunteer at rescue shelters, Gray-Henschel came up with the idea of baking some of her own dogs' favourite cheddar cheese and bacon biscuits and selling them to raise money. The idea had worked when her employer, the RCMP, held fundraising campaigns, so why not try to augment her personal donation toward the poor dog's care? Her goal was to bake 100 dozen and sell them for $3 a dozen. She would then donate all $300 of the proceeds to Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation Services in Oxford Mills, where Journey was convalescing.
Several weeks later, that 100 dozen has become 1,667 dozen and she still has orders for 167 dozen more. By day, she's a director general in the RCMP's national security criminal investigations branch, and every evening she bakes for four hours. Weekends she puts in 12-hour days by the oven.
"My husband has been joking about our hydro bill," she said. "But he's not really complaining."
When she's not baking, she's delivering the biscuits. By the time she fills all her orders, she will have raised $5,600 toward the dog's extensive vet bills, which will likely top $8,000 and include at least one more surgery. If the orders keep coming, she'll keep baking, providing shipping (when necessary), delivery and the baking supplies at her own expense. She hopes to raise $6,000 by Valentine's Day.
"It's just one thing and it's not a big deal, but it shows you can have a huge impact if you do your little thing," she said. "It's such a small thing to do to help rehabilitate this beautiful dog. It's hard to believe someone would do this to her."
The response to Journey's story has been amazing, said Gwendilin Boers, an animal behaviour specialist (she's a PhD candidate in the subject) who runs the shelter and works part-time at the Kanata Animal Hospital.
"We were shocked by her condition," Boers said. "We see some terrible things in rescue, but she's one of the worse cases I have seen in my 16 years of running the rescue."
Journey weighed 74 pounds when a Great Dane at her age should weigh between 110 and 115 pounds. She had fleas, pieces of her ear tips missing, open bite wounds all over her body, a broken tail, frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration and round worms. Boers suspects she was abused. "She was in tragic shape, to say the least."
Boers said the community support had been all the more impressive coming, as it did, just after Christmas.
Journey was brought to the rescue one day after she was found by a Good Samaritan in the freezing rain on the highway near Brockville.
"I'm beyond touched," Boers said, adding that people such as Gray-Henschel had eased the worries about how they would be able to pay the extensive vet bills associated with Journey's recovery. In addition to those who have contributed to the biscuits campaign, private donations have totalled more than $1,000.
"Journey has been a Christmas miracle," Boers said. "She has met every obstacle she has had to overcome with grace and good temperament. She's a very loving dog who has brought so many people together in the spirit of giving. Anna's contribution is just wonderfully overwhelming."
Boers thought it would be June before Journey would be ready for adoption, but, given her progress so far – she now weighs close to 100 pounds – she estimates it will be mid-April.
Donations are being accepted through the Kanata Animal Hospital or by email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org. Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation is accepting donations through PayPal.
I tried to get some photos; and of course, he 'froze'; but tonight as we were having our family/friend annual FONDUE for my Birthday; I managed to snap not only a photo of him plaing with one rope toy BUT this video! DOESN'T he look content! OMG! I wanted to squish him! BUT, I did not… 😉
In this past 24 hours, for some reason, he has just burst through some of his 'scary' barriers and sigh….it makes my heart feel so good for him! 🙂
AND, I am now convinced that he is most likely around 3 years, not 4 and has that lovely 'masking' gene going on with that face. The playful side of him is OMG! SOOOOOOOOOOOO WOW! He is becoming quite affectionate with myself and youthfully playful. I AM so happy for him! 🙂
The below photo is from last night with my iPhone.
BHRR's Freedom – February 4th, 2012 – FIRST TIME EVER PLAYING with a toy! 🙂
In honor of Gwennie, the Founder of BHRR, all of us are wishing her a most wonderful and special of birthdays today – February 3rd!
As we have done for the last 2 years as a surprise for Gwennie; if you believe in BHRR; enjoy all the blog updates, pictures, open houses, GD hikes, Gwennie novel posts, her educational articles plus links; please make a donation in support of her rescue efforts.
This fundraiser shall run through until 11:59 PM today – Friday February 3rd, 2012
This blog post was made without Gwennie's awareness as we have managed to do in the past and we hope that once again, she shall be pleasantly surprised!
You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about always worrying about money for food to help those in need of the BHRR programs. You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about coming up with funds for food by either donating a bag of food or making a donation for food to be bought. You can help ease her stress and worries somewhat today about the mounting food bills for BHRR for beside Vet Bills, this is BHRR's biggest expense.
Together let's make that BHRR 'chain of success' for Gwennie even more strong today!
Email transfer to gwen@birchhaven.org or via PayPal (account gwen@birchhaven.org) OR even bring a bag of food or cash donation to the upcoming BHRR Open House to help BHRR out! As Gwennie states so often, there is no amount too small.
Several of us approached Gwennie again this year to ask what she wanted for her birthday and once again never did she mention anything for herself. Always her family, friends or the animals.
Please do help us make a birthday very special today for a very special lady who operates a very special Rescue by making a food donation to BHRR.
Total Raised to Date – $905 + 6 bags of food

Well today, I was doing a bit of training with Ms. Dynamite aka Bloom and I heard this sound from the kitchen. Never having heard that voice; I went to investigate and here was Freedom wagging his tail slightly( that is so exciting unto itself!!!) looking at the dishwasher and doing a playbow!!! A real playbow and he was barking! AND just what exactly was he barking at! His reflection in the dishwasher! He was really hoping that the handsome dude he saw was going to play with him!
Awwwwww….
When I came in, he looked over his shoulder and was happy! Like he found a new friend!
We will work on the barking….BUT he does have a voice and was comfortable enough to use it!!! AND some tail wags AND a playbow. Those are the important things!!!
Another good day at BHRR! 🙂
AND it happened!!! My patience with bated breath has given me a HUGE reward plus gift!!! Freedom actually took his first not one; but two treats from my hand when he was outside of his 'safe' spot of a crate and ate them right there!!! My heart just melted…..
Their rehab paths are being very slowly travelled at their pace and their steps of beginning to trust and love make me feel honoured and very proud of their bravery!!! One cannot undo a lifetime if neglect and abuse overnight or change their history yet; we can give them a future of warmth, caring and kind spoiling love; that is their right!
AND yes, it was Anna's amazing 'heart' biscuits!!! 🙂
Another great day developing at BHRR thanks to these amazing dogs!!!

BHRR does not adopt out during the XMAS season due to our position that it is not in the best interest of any new addition being added during such a busy, exciting and somewhat stressful time for many. Quite a few other Rescues, Shelters, Pounds etc. have also begun to follow a similar protocol to what we have been doing.
Our XMAS Shutdown period for this year is from Saturday December 17th, 2011 to Tuesday January 3rd, 2012 inclusive.
During this time, BHRR is available 24/7 as always for requests for assistance of animals in need.
For those that wish to follow the journey/updates of all the PRU seized dogs that I have termed FREEDOM DOGS; there is now a Facebook FAN – Freedom DOGS Unite – page for those involved in the seizure – Red Rover, MAPAQ, HSI Canada, the Volunteers, the reputable/quality rescue partners, the donaters, the well wishers and the adopters of what I have termed the FREEDOM DOGS! A name that has now gone viral! 🙂
MAY their journey now pave the way for future 'FREEDOM DOGS' and this page is dedicated to the FREEDOM DOGS UNITE! For we know that THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING! 🙂
The saving of all of these hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of dogs from PRU's was the combined effort of so many likeminded folks! This was something so much larger and incredible that has happened for these precious creatures by all these FANTABULOUS folks working together. 🙂
My first attempt at a Video! This one is of BHRR's Freedom on December 14th, 2011 during feeding time at BHRR. He had the courage to enter the one bathroom and do some exploring.
Both BHRR's Freedom and BHRR's Gretta are terrified of fans, so we have to be very careful to make sure they are not on when both are brave enough to venture forth to do some exploring in the house.
The heartworm tests have come back negative for BHRR's Freedom, BHRR's Peanut and BHRR's Gretta. YAY! 🙂

The newest PRU BHRR 'FREEDOM DOG' is BHRR's Freedom. He was one of the 5 Great Danes that BHRR was asked to assist with at the ES after the seizure was done in September from PRU. He is one of 12 dogs / puppies that BHRR has now assisted and I have been a regular Volunteer at the ES since the very first week the seizure happened. My Disaster Animal Response training has been of deep benefit since I was contacted to Volunteer and continue to Volunteer my time (1-3 times a week) at the ES.
Over 600+ dogs are now in need of forever loving homes and once the court ruling came down on Thursday November 24th, 2011; the move forward was given to allow all these sweet dogs to be altered and then placed up for adoption.
THANK you Red Rover, Anima Quebec, HSI Canda and MAPAQ plus all those that donated, contributed, supported plus Volunteered over these past months to make this happen for these incredible dogs!
FOR ALL THE BHRR's Alberts out there(he came to us at 8.5 years of age and passed away at 10); FREEDOM is now yours! I just wish he was still alive….. 🙁 This is why I have called them "FREEDOM DOGS" a name that has now gone viral!!!
BHRR's Freedom is about 4 years of age(could be younger yet life has been hard on him), Brindle, male and he arrived to BHRR on Tuesday December 6th. He was given his rabies vaccine on September 16th, 2011. We have given him some Revolution and he is being proactively dewormed again.
UPDATE: 'Freedom' is now home after his neutering, dental, bw including HWT, manicure/pedicure and microchip. He weighed 51 KGS(112.20 pounds) and was a star! 🙂 LOVED by all.
I will obtain some photos to post of him. He is a smaller male GD, well porpotioned and very very very terrifed. He will not be placed up for adoption for some time.
NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!
