BHRR’s Walter

ADOPTED!

Mr. Walter, this was another bittersweet adoption for me.

My heart wanted to call you mine and never let you go!

Yet, I knew that when you were ready to be placed up for adoption, that you no longer needed me….you wanted me; yet, no longer needed me.

AND we must let go of the ones that no longer need us so, we can help another that does need us.

It has been an absolute honour helping you to become the best boy you are and your future is so bright.

Closing a chapter is tough, any great foster home can tell you how hard it is to let go, and you make the 422nd time I have done the best thing ever – the right thing too! – by letting one of my fosters – you go!

My heart and soul goes into each and every dog that is in need of our highly specialised programs and you and I will always be connected….we will always have that bond like no other yet; now it is time for you to begin a new exciting wonderful chapter and keep living your best life!

You are already missed yet, know that I am as much excited plus happy as I am through my sniffling tears for as it is said; parting is such sweet sorrow!

Congratulations to you Mr. Walter, such a handsome incredibly sweet blue Great Dane whose charm, kindness, gentleness plus big heart is beyond special! Your determination to live through arriving into rescue so beyond sick; is also a testament to your rock solid inner strength. You have such a goofy silly mischievous side and it is unbelievably endearing.

Thank you to his forever loving adoptive home for all of their patience as we went through our extremely thorough adoption screening process.

SO worth the drive!!

ND as of about 9:15 AM today, we have been on the road driving to do BHRR’s Walters home-visit for a possible approved adoption….

We shall update as we can!

This picture was taken the day I picked him up from his BHRR emerge temp foster home to then bunk down with The Boerskins.

NOTICE:

Unfortunately, we find ourselves having to address the below issues once again. Every few years it seems we must re-visit this despite being very clear on our website, Facebook and Petfinder as to how we operate.

This last 24 hours we have had not one yet, two extremely unpleasant moments.

Let us be extremely clear that if people continue to disrespect what is openly stated; we will involve legal and take the necessary action(s).

Our camera’s are running.

1) we are a foster based rescue that operates out of our home and our approved fosters. NOWHERE does it state that you can just drop by, visit or ‘get’ a dog because you want one.

It is NOT even ok to leave a voice message as a ‘courtesy heads up’ that you are on your way or will be on your way shortly to our PRIVATE property which is our home.

We would never do this to you; so do not expect it to be ok to do it to us. We get so little quality family time as it is and your blatant disregard for being mindful of our family time is not going to be tolerated.

We have a very thorough adoption process which is and has been posted over and over and over again in the last shy of 25 years.

All of the steps to be considered for a BHRR approved adoption is found on our websites and even in the application. We have done our job to have the information there. It is now up to you to read and follow the instructions.

We have posted many times over that only completed applications shall be considered/reviewed. We are NOT going to respond to ANY inquiries sent via email, text, voice message, Petfinder or Facebook. This is and has been posted many times over. So Stop. Spamming via email, text, phone, and/or Petfinder is not going to receive a response. They will be deleted and if you continue, marked as spam/junk/blocked.  It is equally NOT acceptable for you to come uninvited; to our home, private property with or without any completed application in hand.

As we also post, if a dog is listed on Petfinder, on our Website or on Facebook page as being ‘Available For Adoption’, YES, that dog is still available. We directly state that we work to keep everything up to date.

We have equally posted many times over that we are not going to make exceptions to our adoption contract, processes, policies and procedures.

2) the steps to surrender a dog is also openly stated on our website.

Do NOT leave a message and then only a couple of hours later show up at our home expecting us to drop everything and put your request above all of the other needy dogs that are equally ‘urgent’.

This is our home. This is private property.

AND do not say to one of us that you left many emails or voice messages re: said dog when we communicate closely with each other and know that this is a lie.

YOU are making our work more difficult that it ever should be and trust me, operating a highly r/q Rescue is damn hard.

BHRR is not about you; it is about the animals and please allow us to do our jobs; our non paying, 24/7, 365 days a year jobs.

We have been doing this since 1996; know what we are doing, are the experts in what we do from rescue to transport, to rehabilitation to adoption, from feeding to vetting, to training to behavioural modification and so much more.

If you want to adopt; please follow the process. If you have a dog in need; please follow the process.

The Boerskins
BHRR

BHRR’s Walter is moving under a PENDING Adoption!

We will update as we can.

This is an older pic of him when he was battling his eye infections yet, still a goodie!

BHRR UPDATE!

1) In having a discussion with several members of the BHRR BOD; we shall be open as of Septermber 1st – subject to change if need be – for the intake of completed applications ONLY to consider for approved adoptions.

BHRR ONLY places per right matched personality fits and has an extremely thorough adoption screening process.

2) Unfortunately, again….in 2020 we will not be doing a BHRR Calendar. The cost is too high for what comes out of our personal pockets when that is monies that are desperately needed to keep BHRR open.

3) ISO: Auction Items for our upcoming 9th Annual Dine with the BHRR Doggies Event. Human, dogs, cat, gift baskets, gift certificates etc. ALL are welcome!

We also need draw prizes!

Please do not post your kind offers here, please do email contactbhrr@gmail.com

4) It is that time again! Time to think about being a special Secret Santa to the BHRR doggies! 2020 marks our 18th year doing this!!

As of today, we still have 21 deserving BHRR doggies in need of a special SS to call their very own!

To learn more and to sign up, please do visit the link!

5) BHRR is in urgent need of the following items:
Garbage bags – all sizes
Laundry soap
Fabric Softner
Fabric Softner Sheets
Giants Sized Dog Toys
XL Costco Dog Beds
Blankets, Duvets, Towels
Paper Towels
Pinesol

6) Please do reach out if you or someone you know has a Great Dane/Giant Breed Dog in need. We are also a highly/strongly focused special needs rescue so take in other breeds as we can that are also: Deaf and/or Blind, Sick, Senior, Neuro, Injured, Pregnant, Palliative, Nursing, Other Medical, Orphaned & Behavioural

It hurts our hearts to see dogs being put to sleep when there is an organization – we have been around since 1996 – OR to see these dogs end up in disreputable places.

Please do email contactbhrr@gmail.com if you or someone that you know needs assistance.

As we continue to receive inquiries and/or applications re: adoptions, we are making yet another blog post – there is one also made on June 8th AND another one made on July 22nd – on all of our adoptable dogs’ blogs re: our current positioning. Our Facebook page and Petfinder also state our present closure for adoption applications.

**WITH COVID-19, WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING/CONSIDERING ANY NEW ADOPTION APPLICATIONS UNTIL AT LEAST SEPTEMBER.**
**DATE SUBJECT TO CHANGE & BE PUSHED FURTHER OUT ONCE AGAIN.**

Please note that we are NOT reviewing nor approving any new applications for approved adoptions until at least September.

We will re-evaluate this closer to that date as to if we need to extend that date.

We will not be accepting any applications or any non-refundable applications fees during this time.

This is for several reasons:

1) BHRR requires a Vet Reference and as someone who works in animal medicine, I know how absolutely insanely busy we are at this time with our staff/hours. We are NOT going to jam up the phone lines doing vet references when people are trying to get through to make urgent appointments, asking for refills of lifesaving meds, needing prescription food etc.

Additionally, the government has only recently announced that Vet Hospitals can now open up to do non-essential appointments and not only operate on an urgent basis. The backlog to the Vet Hospitals is incredible.

People answering the phones at Vet Hospitals need to be answering the phones for many other reasons. Not for Vet references.

We need to focus on patient care at the Hospital and we respect and understand that other Hospitals need to do the same. We are an essential service and need to be able to provide that service to the best of our abilities and checking Vet references does not fall under that criteria.

2) We cannot nor will we do home-visits. I put my life and my family’s life at risk every day that I go to work to take care of other people’s pets. Doing a home-visit is not responsible nor does it follow the policy set forth from the government that we need to be practising self-isolating to flatten the curve.

Doing a home-visit is not urgent during this COVID-19 pandemic.

At this time, I go to work, utilize the ever dwindling supply of PPE available, I go home, I buy groceries, get gas and that is it for my public appearances. I am thinking NOT only of my dogs, yet, my family and you…I am thinking of all of the other people out there….

3) It does greatly concern us with the number of inquiries coming our way over the past few months with the vast majority being for the wrong reason(s) from people now wanting to adopt.

On a ‘good’ day, we get almost 1,000 emails and about 50 phone calls.

These past several months; we are up to almost 2,000 emails and almost 125 phone calls a day.

People telling us that they now have time on their hands. If you did not have time before you stopped working; what makes you think that you will have time once you go back to work?

Additionally, even with people going on EI; the monies coming in are not the same as if you were working and if you feel that you are struggling to pay bills, buy groceries, how do you feel that you can take on the costs of having a Giant Breed dog?

The average cost – and I have been tracking this since 1996 – of owning a giant breed per year, PRIOR to emergencies is $2,400.

All of this to say; we will not be processing any applications until it is ideal plus safe to do so.

If you send us a completed application along with the non-refundable application fee, we will be responding that we are not accepting nor reviewing applications and when we do feel that it is safe to do so, we shall begin to slowly open up.

Our Petfinder and home websites as posted are kept up to date and all details re: said dogs are on their individual blogs. Once, we do open up again for new applications, we will remain ONLY responding to completed applications. You would be welcome to re-submit your application along with the non-refundable application fee at that time for members of the BHRR BOD to consider. We will NOT be holding on to your applications nor the non-refundable application fee from now to then.

**EXCEPTION: We shall no longer be covering the cost of any banking or PayPal fees should people send this non-refundable fee. In May/June, we were out of pocket almost $100 as people were not be mindful. This is much needed money being taken away from the animals as we are covering the fees out of our own pockets and that is money that we would have used for the BHRR animals.**

Asking us what the cost to adopt is or asking to meet a dog; is all information found on our websites. Each BHRR dog has an extremely thorough individual blog that dates back to when they first arrived into Rescue. Emailing or calling us asking for more details, what our adoption fees are, wanting to come and see the dogs are not going to be responded to any longer. We have posted many times over that we are not a pound, shelter or facility and no, you cannot just visit a dog or make an appointment to visit a dog. We are an all Volunteer organization that operates from our own home and that of our approved Foster homes.

AND yes, we are not other groups – we are NOT going to take chances that our dogs could be set up for failure – and as it is the prerogative of other groups to adopt out during this brutally difficult time, it remains our prerogative to not do so. Our adoption success rates are second to no other group out there – 100% for over 10 years of operating and now 98% as we go through year 24. We will not compromise on our policies, procedures and processes.

We are NOT desperate to adopt out our dogs. All dogs that are deemed adoptable shall ONLY be adopted to right matched personality fit homes that are approved via our thorough adoption screening process.

Thanks!

As we continue to receive inquiries and/or applications re: adoptions, we are making yet another blog post – there is one also made on June 8th – on all of our adoptable dogs’ blogs re: our current positioning. BHRR’s Walter!
AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

He is ready to make his special announcement!

He has made an amazing recovery from when he first arrived to us in March!

He will need a home that will ensure that he remains on his meds required for his environmental/seasonal allergies, for his thyroid AND on his special fish based diet for his food allergies. Cost per month: ~$350

He is housebroken – being on the prednisone does make him drink and wish to eat more so he does ask to go outside a bit more than other dogs, no big deal, he is crate trained, he is wonderful in the car, ok to bathe and do nails and is a big goofy, affectionate boy!

He has this streak in him that when he does not want to do something, he will lay down as he clearly was used to ‘throwing’ his weight around in the past and this is so rare these days. He has come to trust and understand that what is asked of him is in his best interest and if speaking to him in English does not get his attention; he is fluently bilingual and speaking to him French works great!

We do not wish to see him in a home with children under the age of 15. He has been completely fine with people of all ages, sizes, both men and women – yet, was a bit more nervous of men in the beginning.

We want to ensure that any right matched personality fit home is not full of fast, flighty, spastic, unpredictable, loud activity – which kids are naturally!

We would love to see him in a home with a right matched personality fit dog; yet, that is not mandatory. He would be fine as an only dog yet, having worked so hard to demonstrate that other dogs are not out there to hurt him – per his previous O. he has not had outside contact with dogs other than the other dogs they owned; since he was 18 months of age – we want him to have friends! Therefore, a good solid doggie social network of a few close doggie friends n the community would be lovely for him to have!

He loves the companionship of a right matched personality fit dog. He still worries – his reaction is to move away – about strange dogs and we are extremely proud of how brave he has been!

He has been fine with cats and even rabbits!

He can go to a home that works out of the home or in the home, ft, pt, is semi-retired or retired. Another versatile BHRR dog!

His leash manners have improved significantly. He can sometimes still be a bit of a freight train yet, WOW has he gotten a million times better.

We have worked hard to build up that muscle mass and tone in his hind end so going for strolls and small walks for proper mental and physical stimulation is perfect yet, he is not a go for a 8 km walk/hike boy. He is a low energy/activity Dane compared to so many that we have assisted over the past almost 25 years in our Great Dane rescue.

He is a great companion! The best in reading a book, watching a movie or sitting on the porch watching the deer drink from the spring fed pond.

He is the ‘strong silent type’, just quiet and a big handsome blue Great Dane with a heart that is pure, honest and loving!

He has been so low maintenance for us and is going to make that right matched forever loving home the most amazing of family members.

He has a mischievous side and he makes me giggle when I know that he does not want to do what is being asked of him and you can see the brain just working overtime!

I love him so much in all of his true gentle giant representation of the Great Dane breed.

I am bursting with happiness over your awesome rehabilitation with us and I have sadness in my heart for our time together is drawing ever nearer to a close in this chapter that we have had together.

All of our adoption processes, policies and procedures are found on our home website for anyone that may feel that they may qualify to adopt him.

Between all of that information and his detailed blog; no questions that any home may have be left unanswered.

YOU DID IT BHRR’s Walter and thank you again to Josée of Josée Lavoie Pet Photography for these stunning photo’s. Thank you again to Elaine, Bob and Hazel for their extra hands during his professional photo shoot on July 3rd!

BHRR’s Walter!

ISO: of someone who may be open to donating some time to assist in taking some professional photo’s in preparation for him to make his own special announcement BECAUSE…..

He has his latest recheck today!

His weight is hanging close to 150 pounds and he is loking fabu! He will remain on the prednisone, was given new eye medication – Torbradex and must stay on his fish based food for life.

Thumbs up to his healing new eyes and skin!

Everyone at work has made so many wonderful comments re: how far he has come since he first arrived to us!

How much more confident, social – tail wagging and seeking affection and did not hesitate to love on everyone!

So many amazing comments on the muscle mass and toning that we are getting on his hind end.

He also got to briefly see/visit with BHRR’s Olive who was having her own surgery today.

He has had such an amazing rehabilitation journey both physically and behaviourally and I am head over heels in love with this amazing character!!!

He has a mind all of his own, he has learned a lot re: compromising vs we are going to discuss this and in the end, we are still going to do what Gwennie is asking and he speaks volumes without even saying a word!

I am bursting with so much pride YET again over his incredible journey to health and am so excited for him to make his own special announcement!

If you are a professional photographer and may be willing to donate some time to help capture this gorgeous dude in all of his handsome glory, please do advise – contactbhrr@gmail.com

BHRR is in urgent need of the below items:

1) new or gently used comforters/duvets/blankets
2) new or gently used sleeping bags
3) new or gently used towels
4) new or gently used pillows
5) Pinesol
6) Benny Bully dog treats

Thanks in advance for any consideration!!!

He is back at the Vet tomorrow for his latest recheck and hoping for a thumbs up!!

PLEASE email contactbhrr@gmail.com if you can help! Do not post on this thread…responses can get missed!

BHRR’s Walter!

He had his recheck on Tuesday June 2nd!

He is doing great yet, still needs some medical rehab care since his bilateral entropion surgery – he is still on medications for his eyes as during his latest recheck, he was found to be battling an eye infection in his right eye. He also has eye lube.

He will need at least one more recheck for his eyes, we are slowly weaning him off of the pred and he remains on his thyro tabs plus a fish based kibble.

LOOK how amazing he now looks and according to his wonderful foster Mama and I have seen this several times myself, he is feeling super too!

He is doing really well with people – I noted at his latest recheck how much more calm and accepting he was of everyone. His tail was down yet, not tucked right up under his belly.

He did not have any reaction to the dogs that he has seen at work at his recheck nor with our clinic cat.

Careful integration as always is key!

He has been doing great with the other dog in the home plus their cat that he is being currently fostered in. Due to lack of socialization in his previous home; he has been scared/slightly reactive – a few growls – at strange dogs when he first arrived.

AMAZING progress! He will be back for another recheck in 10 days or so and then it will be time to work on his muscle mass/toning of his hind end.

He has been making a lot of lovely fans and friends since his time with BHRR and his personality is starting to really shine!

AND this is what your support and belief in us enables us to do!!!! To be here for special needs like him!!!! THANK YOU!

BHRR’s Walter!

He went in for surgery on May 19th to get his new eyes! He had his much needed bilateral entropion surgery as he was finally healthy enough to have the surgery.

His weight was 147.4 pounds(67 kgs). He has now put on 15.4 pounds (7 kgs) since he first arrived to BHRR’s care in March. He still needs a bit more weight and once he has recovered from his eye surgery, our next focus is working to building up his muscle mass and strength in his hind end.

I microchipped him while he was under, he had a great manicure/pedicure and he received tons of gentle love from many of my colleagues during his time at work!

He is now on two types of pain meds, oral and eye antibiotics plus some trazodone to help keep him calm and comfortable while he heals.

He remains on his pred plus thyro tabs along with a special fish based diet and when he is back for his recheck in 10-14 days, we will do more bloodwork at that time.

He is now sporting a very fashionable cone – 40 cm – and it was truly lovely for all to note how far he has come since we first received the urgent message that he needs rescue or that he would be killed later that same day.

He is a really sweet boy and THANKS to his foster Mama for taking excellent care of him!

Thank you’s extended from our hearts once once more to my fellow team mates @ EVC and to both Dr. G. & Dr. Ammar for giving him excellent Vet care since his arrival to BHRR.

We will make a separate post re: Miss Volt who also had surgery on the 19th!

We still await surgery dates from the specialist for both BHRR’s Coupe and BHRR’s Royal Blu for their legs – both of them have front leg concerns, requiring no less than 6 surgeries between them both & BHRR’s Royal Blu also needs his own bilateral entropion plus a cherry eye repair.

Our GivingGrid fundraiser is below and what has generously come in to date, will cover both of BHRR’s Walters and Miss Volts  – their Vet bills on Tuesday came to $2,141.41 and we are almost half way to our goal!

We remain deeply humbled, grateful, and thankful to everyone that stands strong by our special needs rescues side helping us to work hard to keep our doors open during this brutally difficult time.

We cannot do this alone and though we along with so many r/q groups are going through such dark scary times, it immensely warms our hearts to have members of our village fighting as hard as we are to be here for those in need of our highly specialised and much needed programs.

The link to our GivingGrid fundraiser is HERE and donation considerations can also continue to be sent direct to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic 613-383-8381 or via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org or via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com

BHRR’s Walter(photo) & BHRR’s Miss Volt are scheduled for Tuesday May 19th for their surgeries.

BHRR’s Walter is booked to have both of his eyes repaired for his bilateral entropion. That is the next step in his own rehabilitation program. YOU are going to feel even better after your surgery sweet boy!

BHRR’s Miss Volt is FINALLY going to have her spay and those two small incisors removed. Baby girl, your rehab journey has been long yet, we are almost there!

COVID-19 sure did not help AND we still have BHRR’s Royal Blu(eyes/2 legs) and BHRR’s Coupe(2 legs) waiting for their own specialist surgeries…..

Please know that your beautiful support enables us to keep helping dogs like BHRR’s Walter, BHRR’s Royal Blu, BHRR’s Coupe and BHRR’s Miss Volt.

To date, our givinggrid fundraiser has raised: $1,276 in 24 hours. WOW! We are 25% to our goal. We do remain in urgent need of your generosity to help BHRR stay strong.

To all that have posted supportive words and/or donated and/or shared our call for financial donations, please know how much you humble us, you honour us and we thank you for being there in our massive time of need.

Should you not wish to donate via the givinggrid – link is HERE!, donations can be sent via email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com or even direct to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic 613-383-8381

As always, thank you for any and all consideration to help keep BHRR strong!

BHRR’s Walter

Someone needs a bigger bed……and while the picture is kind of cute, the reality is not…..

We had a wonderful rescue angel donate monies for BHRR’s Walter to have his own dog bed – sadly, Costco did not have any XL beds at that time, so we ordered online from a different business….

When that bed came in – in photo – it was not what it was suppose to be in dimensions and now, we are in conversation with the company working on getting our funds back. They are not being co-operative despite all documentation to demonstrate what was sent is not what we paid for.

So, dear sweet Walter is still using BHRR’s Bells bed in the meantime…..

As so many are experiencing, times are very tough for everyone and Rescue organisations are not exempt from the current brutal economy.

Every day is a struggle for r/q groups – we are down to 1.5 days left of fish based kibble to feed no less than 5 dogs in need of said kibble.

We have mounting Vet bills for meds, prescription foods and urgent care that can not be put on hold.

Animals do not stop needing high quality care during this COVID-19 nightmare.

If anyone may consider donating an XL dog bed for BHRR’s Walter and/or a bag of FROMM Salmon or Whitefish, our gratitude would be hundred fold.

The stress is real….we have been operating for over 24 years and have gone through more than our share of difficult time’s and right now is top of those hardship experiences….

Donations can be made via PayPal to gwen@birchhaven.org or via Email transfer to contactbhrr@gmail.com or even direct to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic to our rescue account there: 613-383-8381.

Thank you’s from our heart to everyone in our BHRR village for being there during these unprecedented times…..

He is slowly gaining weight (he has put on 2.1 kgs in two weeks) – still very skinny, yet, he is improving! He is now 62.10 kgs(136.62 pounds).

The healthier he is getting, the better he is feeling and the more weight he is putting on. His fabu foster mama says that he is eating very well!

His feet, skin, face etc. are all looking SO much better! He now has toes!

He remains on pred, antibiotics and has now been put on two eye medications for his eye infections. He will require his own bilateral entropion surgery once he is healthier.

We have him on a fish based food and his body is responding wonderfully to it!

The bleeding and lesions all over his body have pretty much resolved, he is not itchy like he once was was, he is more alert, beginning to become playful and is no longer as uncomfortable.

I also gave him a much needed nail trim on Friday. He ROCKED it!

He is on thyroid medication as without it per his previous Vet Records; he was diagnosed with severe hypothyroidism. He had been having seizures and vestibular ataxia.

He has a very long journey ahead of him and we thank ALL of his rescue angels to date for donating to his extremely deserving cause….!

His personality is starting to come out and he LOVES the humans, not so sure of the clinic cat at work and we will be beginning to work on his intergration with other dogs.

We will also begin to work more on his muscle mass and tone. He is lacking a lot.

We are still waiting on the special stain decision on his three biopsies yet, the prelim results demonstrate:

MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION:
Haired skin (chin and face): Tissue consists of three punch biopsies of haired skin which have been bisected. There is epidermis and dermis with adnexa and minimal subcutis. The epidermis is multifocally moderately hyperplastic with parakeratosis. Frequently hair follicles are hyperplastic with occasional
sheets of degenerate viable neutrophils, eosinophils and macrophages to ruptured with free hair shafts frequently surrounded by similar inflammation described with regions of pyogranulomatous and eosinophilic and granulomatous inflammation. Occasionally regions of dermis within one sample are expanded by abundant pyogranulomatous inflammation forming discrete pyogranulomas with surrounding fibrin, edema and hemorrhage.

MICROSCOPIC INTERPRETATION:
Marked to severe chronic pyogranulomatous to eosinophilic and granulomatous dermatitis and folliculitis with frequent furunculosis with intralesional free hair shafts and regionally extensive fibrin, edema and hemorrhage (PENDING special stains; see comments)

COMMENTS:
THIS IS AN INTERIM REPORT.
Changes are consistent with a significant dermatitis, folliculitis and furunculosis with evidence of chronic trauma to these areas. There is no definitive evidence of infectious agents observed with routine stains. There is no definitive evidence of a neoplastic process within the sections of tissue reviewed histologically. The cause for these lesions is unknown but histomorphologic features and clinical
findings may be secondary to a hypersensitivity reaction within this region with chronic trauma and subsequent enlargement of adnexa with rupture or potentially this represents a deep pyoderma with subsequent trauma and furunculosis. Additional special stains are pending to evaluate for the presence of etiologic agents. The findings of the special stains will be reported in the final report and any additional comments if warranted.

*VIDEO sent our way by his previous Owner the morning we were asked to assist this Great Dane*

UPDATE: BHRR’s Walter has tested negative for heartworm, tick borne diseases, sarcoptic and demodectic mange.

We are waiting to discuss in detail – I have been sent them today – his biopsy results – three biopsies taken and his thyroid panel with his Vet. I have questions that only the expertise of his Vet will be able to confirm/validate and answer for me. So, will not post more on those results until that conversation occurs.

He has been placed on antibiotics, thyro meds, pred, been de-wormed and is now on a fish based food only.

Per his previous vet records, last summer he was diagnosed with severe hypothyroidism. He had been having seizures and vestibular ataxia.

He has clear auto immune and extreme skin issues, quite common with blue Great Danes, being a recessive gened bred colour.

He had not been on any meds for a couple of weeks per his previous Owner/past records and had remained on a chicken/poultry based food. Per his past records, he had not remained on allergy meds consistently allowing flare-ups to occur and then became worse.

The bleeding on his body has slowed down, the swelling is coming down, some of his lesions and wounds are drying up – he has toes plus feet now – and he is eating well. His hydration level is slowly coming up too.

His eyes remain runny and red – yet, they now can open! – and will need to have his own bilateral entropion surgery – once again so common in this euro blood line Danes.

The trauma caused to his body is apparent and will take a long time to rehabilitate and we are taking it one step at a time.

I briefly saw him myself yesterday and his temperament is loving and such a hoot! When he does not want to do something, he just lays right down! Already he is feeling a bit better, putting on some weight on that skinny body and his personality is slowly poking through!

He remains very weak, especially in his hind end and is a very sick boy yet, he is surrounded by a village that is strong and determined!

Once again, before anyone posts in judgement and negativity, do note that the owner DID reach out for help and we are assisting. So, please be mindful of any words posted. It is not a great situation, we all agree, yet, realise that any words you post could prevent another Owner from reaching out and doing the right thing, and that would mean an animal would be euthanised over being assisted.

We will continue to operate on a zero tolerance policy re: the above.

We just had to find a way to step up to save him. Yes, we are financially overwhelmed with the ever mounting Vet Bills for BHRR’s Coupe and BHRR’s Royal Blu; yet, we just had to rescue this special needs Dane in urgent need of us too.

We know this is difficult times for all and have no right to beg for donations, yet, I have no ego or pride and shall continue to do what I need to to make miracles happen for those in need of our highly specialised programs. So, I do beg and grovel and keep hope alive in my heart….

It is not going to be easy yet, I am going to focus on the possible, not the impossible…..

UPDATE: *Walter* is now at Eagleson Veterinary Clinic. This is one picture sent my way of part of his face.

Bloodwork is being run and biopsies have been taken and he is being examined.

Will update more as I can….

BHRR has been quickly mobilising behind the scenes to rescue this Great Dane.

We received an email in the wee hours of the AM that he needed help or the Owner said the Vet would ‘kill him today’.

As soon as I saw the email a couple of hours later, I jumped on it, begged for some time and then the incredible links on our BHRR ‘CHAIN OF SUCCESS’ were put into action.

One of our fabu approved Volunteers now has him – thank you for dropping everything to help! – and is on his way direct to Eagleson Veterinary Clinic, who have been alerted and are standby to receive him. Drive safe Bob!

I am not going to post more at this time re: his current medical state other than to say, we could not let him be put to sleep and are going to do all necessary diagnostics plus treatments for him. Yes, he has lesions, wounds and swelling all over his body including his front feet and muzzle and he is skinny – from a video and pics, he looks somewhat emaciated. He can barely open his eyes.

He is in pain, clearly suffering and bleeding. This is his reality right now.

However, before anyone posts in judgement and negativity, do note that the owner DID reach out for help and we are assisting. So, please be mindful of any words posted. It is not a great situation, we all agree, yet, realise that any words you post could prevent another Owner from reaching out and doing the right thing, and that would mean an animal would be euthanised over being assisted.

I shall post what is known from his past Vet Records along with what our expert Vet Team will determine form examining and testing him.
