BHRR’s Potter is a 15 months old; Deaf Boxer AKA BHRR’s ‘Honourary Great Dane’ that was picked up by a Rescuer and Animal Control employee in N.Y., USA back in July of 2009 and after not being able to find a reputable/quality Rescue to take him in; BHRR was contacted to assist as we focus on the Special Needs. Potter was not even deemed important enough by his old owners to be given a name during the almost 1 year they had him. They used to laugh and call him ‘DUMBO’. 🙁 He was allowed to run loose and many a day he was almost hit by transports on the highway. It took a month of very long and patience work on behalf of this Rescuer to convince the home to turn Potter over. Potter did not know even how to play, was painfully thin, not housebroken(clearly not allowed inside) and his obedience was zero. We brought Potter into our BHRR program on July 13th, 2009 and in the four months that he has been part of BHRR; he has come a very long way.

On Saturday November 14th, I noticed what appeared to be a small red mark, similar to a ‘black fly bite’ on Potter’s left inner thigh and thought it required one of my Vets to take a closer look at it and as wanting to also get his heart/lungs examined as I have been worried about his breathing at times; I made an appointment for Monday the 23rd. In the meantime; I kept monitoring this spot and every day it was getting larger and beginning to look more like a growth. As several that attended our Sunday’s BHRR Mini Open House can attest to; I was saying that I did not like the look of it and hoped it was not cancerous. When Wednesday AM of the 18th of November rolled around; I really felt uneasy with the larger size(quarter) plus the redness of it. Potter also found it uncomfortable for me to examine it. I made an appointment for that night. The Vet felt it looked ‘classic’ Mast Cell and the FNA confirmed her suspicions. From there, we ran X-Rays to determine if it had metatisized in Potter’s lungs. To date, his lungs are clear. We also ran a BW plus UA on Potter. The decision was to make arrangements ASAP to have his left back leg removed to give him the best chance possible of having a quality of life moving forward.

The cost of his Vet Bills are now over $3,000. We are calling this “Potter’s Path” that he must travel and I have created this page on Thursday November 19th, 2009 as we look towards the public supporters of BHRR and those that have become fans of BHRR’s Potter; to help us save Potter by removing this left back leg. The total cost of all of his Vet Bills are going to be over $3,000.

We are trying to raise $1,122 more to pay for his Vet Care. To everyone that has met BHRR’s Potter at our Mini Open Houses, GD Walks/Hikes, Soccer Practises etc. or have become virtual fans, we beg of you to consider helping us to help Potter. Potter has never met a person or a dog that he has not loved and he really deserves this chance at life!
