BHRR’s Ava Marie is a 2 year old(born November 21st, 2007); Harlequin spayed female Great Dane that is overweight at 191.80 pounds (height is 36″ so very tall – yet her weight should be around 155) and has two blown cruciates and is now living in excruciating pain. We were contacted by Animal Control in NY, USA to see if we would be open to assisting Ava as she has two blown cruciates from playing with the dogs belonging to her current owner’s mother. She will require extensive Vetting(one estimate was $6,000+) plus Rehab(HydroTherapy, Physio & Massage). As always we are deeply indebted for any funds to help us assist Ava in becoming healthy and happy again. Should BHRR not have committed to taking in Ava; she would have been put to sleep. 😥 She arrived to BHRR on Sunday March 7th, 2010. Please consider helping her….even $5.00 is not too little.

OR you can call Liston Animal Hospital at (613) 591-0966 to pay on Ava Marie’s Bill directly by Visa or M/C – Ava’s bill is under the account name of ‘Ava Boers.’ Dr. Liston was the Vet that did both BHRR’s Jaxson’s and BHRR’s Potter’s leg amputations in 2009.
Our initial plan of attack is to get BHRR’s Ava Marie on 1.5 -2 tabs of 100 mg Deramaxx SID and Ava Marie had an appointment on Wednesday March 10th with Dr. Liston to evaluate. We discussed that we most likely will have to get her to lose significant weight (a minimum of 30 pounds) before her first cruciate repair surgery(we will not do both at once on such a large dog) and schedule that within 2 months or so from her arrival. At the weight she is, she could easily re-injure herself by ‘weight’ bearing. About 6 weeks – 8 weeks after that, we would do the second cruciate. Per Dr. Liston, this is a very difficult situation for successful treatment for BHRR’s Ava Marie in respect to finances, recovery plus rehab and I appreciate his honesty. BHRR has been done this road before and we thank everyone in advance for their consideration in helping us with Ava. We appreciate Dr. Listons`professional opinion on the success of treating BHRR`s Ava Marie successfully. She has 60% chance of re-injuring either leg within the first year and as many do know that if one is repaired and the other has not yet blown; there is a 80% chance within the first year that dogs will blow the other cruciate. Unfortunately, BHRR’s Ava Marie has blown both already. 😥
Update: May 21st, 2010 – Due to BHRR`s Ava Marie having had to lose at least 30 pounds, her first surgery(right cruciate) did not happen until Friday May 21st, pictures below and Ava Marie was 72 KGS or 158.4 pounds. That is a loss of 33.4 pounds! From there, in another 6-8 weeks; we shall look at having surgery done on the left cruciate.
Update: August 13th, 2010: BHRR’s Ava Marie had her second surgery today; this time on the left cruciate and pictures have been added below. Ava Marie was 67.1 KGs today(147.62 pounds). When she first arrived at BHRR, she was 191.80 pounds.
This is the first stage for Ava Marie along her long road to recovery with your ‘action assistance’.

BHRR takes in animals that others will not or can not and Ava is such a ‘DREAM’ dog and completely melted my soul when I first met her on March 7th, 2010 and we believe that she is so very deserving of BHRR’s help. Unfortunately, once again we find ourselves begging and pleading to our BHRR supporters to please assist us with another wonderful BHRR Animal; this time BHRR’s Ava Marie.
